In addition to the work I do at the practice, I also work for the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute, which is linked with the University of Basel. The activities involved in the institute’s project include the collection, processing and publication of data concerning the health of the general public. As lecturer for Social and Preventive Medicine, I am also involved in the education of students taking Medicine and Sports Science. This includes teaching the basics about Public Health and Epidemiology.
Public Health is the “collective efforts of society to maintain and improve health in all sectors of society" (Abelin, 1999).
Promoting good health and prevention are included in this field of
“Public Health”. Public Health takes into account various factors that influence our health.
Epidemiology is a core discipline of Public Health.
According to the definition of epidemiology as issued by the WHO (World Health Organization), it refers to the study of the distribution of health-related states (including diseases), psychological variables and the social consequences of diseases on sections of the population as well as the factors that influence their distribution.
Promoting good health and prevention are integral parts of my work at the practice. I am especially keen to offer medicine that is individually tailored to the patient’s requirements and that is also epidemiologically based. In this respect, you, as the patient, can also benefit from my work at the Swiss tropical and Public Health Institute at the University of Basel.
